Why You Should Winterize Your Sprinkler Systems

As with all water systems, sprinklers require particular attention as the weather begins to cool. All sprinkler systems need to be winterized in order to avoid major problems, such as the expansion and cracking of pipes.

There are several different methods for winterizing your sprinkler system, including:

  1. Manually drain your system of all water. You will need to shut down the water supply, open every manual drain valve, open the boiler drain valve and once the mainline is fully drained, re-open the shut off valve of the sprinkler system. The next step is to open the test cocks leading to the backflow installation. If your sprinkler system is equipped with check valves, you will need to lift up the sprinklers so that the water at the bottom will drain out from the sprinkler body. When all the water is removed, you can close all your manual valves.
  2. Use an air compressor. Using an air compressor you will winterize your sprinkler system by eliminating all residual water from the sprinkler, piping, up to the backflow. This is a more complete for of winterization, requiring very little time.

Of course, if you would rather leave everything up to the professionals, hiring a lawn care specialist is a great solution and will ensure that your sprinkler system is properly winterized and ready for the drop in temperature.
