Setting Sprinkler Timers :: Tips from Maryland’s Lawn Irrigation Experts

As we have mentioned before, setting your sprinklers on a timer is a great way to maximize the effectiveness of your irrigation system while also minimizing your labor commitment. But before you arbitrarily set your system, there are a few factors you need to consider, including:

  1. Sprinkler Type: Are your sprinklers fixed spray heads, low volume streamers or pop-up rotors? Each type of sprinkler has a different output and requires a different amount of time to effectively water its zone.
  2. Timer Type: Effective timers will have the option of between two and four programs, each with multiple start times. This will allow you to water individual zones differently, maximizing the effectiveness of your irrigation system.
  3. Sprinkler Zones: It is important to know the elements of each individual zone. Is the zone strictly grass, is there a flowerbed or garden, or a mix? Sun and shade, as well as the slope of the ground also play an important role in this process.
  4. Soil Type: The type of soil you have will also play a role in watering. Certain soils require more water than others.

Remember, each lawn is different and requires a unique approach to watering.
