What Your Sprinkler Quote Includes (And What It Doesn’t)

Why Sprinkler Quotes Seem Confusing

Have you ever gotten a quote for a sprinkler system and found yourself confused by what it says? If so, don’t worry, as these quotes aren’t always straightforward with what they entail. Some companies give you a number with zero context. Others throw in vague descriptions or bundle things in a way that hides what you’re really paying for.

That’s not how we do it at TLC! We want you to have a quote that’s transparent and easy to understand.

I believe when a homeowner in Bethesda or Bowie asks, “What does this sprinkler quote actually cover?” they deserve a clear, honest answer.

What’s Always Included in a TLC Quote

When we send you a quote for a sprinkler system, it includes everything you need for a complete, functional, professional-grade system. Here’s the breakdown:

Design + Planning

  • Site measurement (we use aerial imaging and on-site verification)
  • Water pressure and flow-rate testing
  • Custom zone planning based on sun/shade, turf vs. beds, and plant types

Design isn’t just drawing lines on a map. We walk the yard, test water pressure, locate your utility lines, and figure out exactly where each sprinkler head should go. You’d be surprised how many systems we fix that were installed without this kind of prep.

Materials

  • High-quality pipe (usually poly or PVC, depending on application)
  • Commercial-grade sprinkler heads (rotors, sprays, drip lines as needed)
  • Backflow prevention device (required by code in most counties)
  • Valves, manifolds, fittings, and boxes
  • Controller (standard or smart, depending on the quote)

We use trusted brands like Hunter, Rain Bird, and Rachio. We stay away from cheap, low-quality materials because we know they won’t last.

Labor + Installation

  • Trenching or vibratory plowing
  • Head placement and adjustments
  • Controller installation and wiring
  • Backflow installation (with permit if required)
  • Testing and calibration
  • Cleanup and lawn restoration

Our crews show up clean, on time, and ready to do it right the first time. If something doesn’t look or work right, we fix it before you ever have to ask.

Warranty

  • Typically 1–2 years on parts and labor
  • Smart controller setup support included

We document everything and store records for future service

Walkthrough + Training

Our staff will go over the many details about using your sprinkler system. We’ll tell you:

  • How the system works
  • How to adjust heads and zones
  • How to use the controller or app

Whether you’re old school or tech-savvy, we make sure you know how to run your system without guessing.

What It Doesn’t Include (Unless We Add It On Purpose)

We want to be clear about everything in your quote. This doesn’t just mean mentioning what it includes, but also what it doesn’t include. Here’s what you might not see unless it’s discussed:

Major Landscape Restoration

We patch the trenches and rake things smooth, but we don’t re-sod or replant unless it’s specifically quoted. (Most lawns recover fast, especially with a little water!)

Need fresh sod or planting? We can add it—just ask.

Electrical Work Outside the Scope

If we need to install a new outdoor outlet or run conduit through your home, that may require a licensed electrician. We work with reliable partners if that comes up, and we’ll let you know if calling in electricians has become a necessity for your project.

Plumbing Modifications Inside the House

Backflow devices are installed outside, but if we need to tie into a line inside a basement or crawlspace, that may require additional work. We always notify you first.

Ongoing Maintenance

Spring start-up, winterization, and mid-season checkups are not included in the installation quote. We offer seasonal plans for these. Most homeowners in Silver Spring, Potomac, and Arlington choose one of our service plans.

Case Study: Clear Quote in Columbia

We recently installed a 5-zone smart sprinkler system for a family in Columbia.

What our quote included: – All heads, valves, and pipe – Smart Wi-Fi controller – Trenching and install – Full walkthrough and setup

What our quote didn’t include: – Re-sodding around the garden bed they were already planning to redo – Annual maintenance (they signed up for our TLC Plus Plan instead)

They appreciated the clarity. No surprises. Just results.

“You explained more in one quote than the other two companies did in their entire visit,” the homeowner said.

FAQ: Why Are Quotes from Other Companies Lower?

Good question. There are a few reasons why some companies might have lower quotes than others. Some of the reasons include:

  • They’re using lower-grade parts
  • They skip backflow prevention
  • They don’t include permits or controller setup
  • They quote fewer zones (and leave you with dry spots)
  • They subcontract the work to crews who don’t know your yard

We see this all the time. A cheap quote now turns into headaches later. Broken heads. Soggy spots. Dry patches. Angry calls. While the lower price is appealing initially, you won’t find yourself with a good long-term sprinkler solution. The low price of a quote often means that the results will be low quality, requiring that you find another company to come fix the problem(s). We fix dozens of these every season.

Local Knowledge Matters

We’ve installed sprinkler systems across:

  •  Rockville clay soils (need lower flow heads)
  • Arlington hills (need check valves + smart programming)
  • Annapolis tree canopies (need drip lines + special zones)
  • Bowie front lawns with tight setbacks and HOA rules

We quote what your property needs, not what looks cheapest on paper, because we pride ourselves in delivering the most satisfactory services possible, both for the short and long-term.

Our team knows the quirks of DMV landscaping. That experience shows in every quote we send.

What You Can Expect After the Quote

Here’s our process:

  1. Walk the yard: We walk it with you, not just look at a map.
  2. Discuss options: Smart or standard, drip or spray, phasing it in or doing it all now. We help you decide on the right sprinkler system for your property.
  3. Send a detailed quote: Line-by-line breakdown. No lump-sum guessing.
  4. Review with you: We address every question and concern you may have.
  5. Give you time: No pressure. No hard sell. Ever.

When you’re ready, we schedule and deliver exactly what we promised. Most installs take 1–3 days depending on size and complexity.

Bonus: What Happens After Installation?

  • We walk you through the entire system.
  • We label everything.
  • We give you a printed + digital owner’s manual.
  • We record all your zone maps and notes in our system.
  • We follow up 30 days later to see how things are working.

That’s the TLC way.

Final Thought from Bob

Your sprinkler system is a big investment in your property’s health, value, and your own peace of mind.

We take that seriously, which is why we write quotes that you can read, understand, and trust.

So the next time someone hands you a one-page quote with no explanation, ask them: “What exactly does this include?”

And if they can’t explain it like I just did? Call me.

Because when you ask, Bob Carr answers.
