What’s Better for My Underground Lawn Sprinkler System — Poly Pipe or PVC Pipe?

From the Desk of Bob Carr

I get asked this question all the time: “Bob, which is better — poly pipe or PVC pipe for my sprinkler system?” The truth is, both materials have their place, but they’re very different, and which one is best depends on your property, soil conditions, and long-term goals.

PVC Pipe

PVC (white rigid pipe) is very common in irrigation systems, especially in certain parts of the country. It’s durable, holds up well under pressure, and is less prone to punctures. However, it is rigid — which means every change of direction requires a glued joint or fitting. Those fittings are the weak point. Over time, joints can crack, especially if the ground shifts during freeze/thaw cycles. PVC also tends to be more labor-intensive to install because of all the cutting and gluing.

Poly Pipe

Poly pipe (black flexible pipe) is more popular here in Maryland and throughout the colder regions. Why? Flexibility. Poly can bend with the contour of your lawn without requiring nearly as many fittings. Fewer fittings mean fewer potential leaks down the road. Poly also expands and contracts better with our seasonal temperature changes — which is important when winter hits. The downside? If the wrong clamps or fittings are used, connections can pop. That’s why professional installation and the right stainless-steel clamps are critical.

Comparison: Poly Pipe vs. PVC Pipe

Feature Poly Pipe PVC Pipe
Flexibility Highly flexible, fewer fittings Rigid, requires more glued fittings
Cold Weather Expands/contracts well in freeze-thaw cycles Prone to cracking at joints in freeze-thaw cycles
Installation Faster, fewer parts required Labor-intensive, more cutting and gluing
Durability Long-term success in Mid-Atlantic Durable but joint failures more common

Which One Do We Recommend?

At TLC, we typically recommend poly pipe for underground sprinkler systems in our area. It’s easier to service, holds up better through our winters, and has a long-term track record of success in the Mid-Atlantic region. PVC may be fine in warmer climates with stable soil, but for our clients, poly is usually the smarter choice.

Our Industry-Leading Warranty

We back our installations with a **SEVEN-YEAR WARRANTY — the strongest in the industry.** The reason we can do that is simple: we use the right materials, the right tools, and we install systems the right way the first time. When you combine high-quality poly pipe, stainless-steel fittings, professional-grade compressors for winterization, and decades of experience, we know your system is built to last.

PS: If you’re thinking about a new sprinkler system or upgrading an old one, give us a call at TLC or visit www.tlcincorporated.com. We’ll help you choose the right materials for your yard and make sure the installation is done right the first time.
