Fall is fast approaching, and yes—your underground lawn sprinkler system needs to be winterized before the harsh winter conditions roll in. But should you do it right now? Maybe not just yet.
Here’s the deal: early fall is prime time for lawn health. If you’re aerating, overseeding, and applying a starter fertilizer, your lawn needs consistent moisture to help those new roots take hold. That’s where your sprinkler system still earns its keep.
A quick rule of thumb I use: grass growth hums along as long as the soil temperature stays around 58°F or higher. If your daytime air temps are still in the 70s and nights are fairly mild, your soil is likely warm enough to keep your lawn growing. That makes continued—though sensible—watering a smart move.
So when should you shut it down?
Plan to winterize before your first hard freeze and once night temperatures regularly dip into the 30s. That’s your cue to pull the plug, blow out the lines, and put the system to bed for winter—without risking cracked pipes, busted valves, or spring‑time repair bills.
My recommendation: keep your system running lightly while your new seed is germinating and roots are knitting in. Then schedule winterization on the back end of that window. You’ll get the best of both worlds—healthier turf now and a safer system all winter.

Quick Fall Watering Tips from TLC:
